Comedy in store
Jane McConnell argues that things are funnier up north...
The Comedy Store is located at the end of Deansgate locks, next to Revolution, Pitcher & Piano and Baa Bar – kind of a very typical and safe spot for a night out with the ladies, but if you want to avoid the normal crowds, then make sure you get to the Store for their late-night (11pm-1.30am) Saturday show.
For a start, it's about half the price of the 8pm show and the performance is a lot more relaxed, which results in better comedy and funnier, drunker hecklers who get shot down quite badly. So all in all, the late show is very entertaining.
However, if you can’t bear to part with over a tenner for a ticket for, well, anything that isn’t a huge-massive-band, then wait for the Sunday show. The only other Store in the country is in London, which means that both cities have access to each locality's greatest comedic talent but of course, I argue for the Mancunian corner, and yeah, we’re way funnier mate.
The Sunday nights used to be it’s where up and coming talent on the local circuit tryout their latest material before getting ripped apart by the audience that actually pays more silver for their banter. However, you’ll have to fork out a huge two pounds now if you want to have your belly made to ache before the Monday slog…
Comedy Store, 3 & 4 Deansgate Locks, Whitworth St West. Sunday New Stuff, £2.00, 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Saturday Late Show, £12.00
